On Academic Meaning of Severe Weather and Severe Sea Condition

In order to discuss the exact connotation of the terms "severe weather" and "severe sea condition", the literature analysis method is used to sort out the definition and classification of the terms and analyze them from the perspectives of academic research, maritime management and national standards. The coupling relation between severe weather and severe sea condition is discussed. It is found that there are problems such as vague expression and unclear definitions of the two terms in related fields. Four suggestions for standardizing the definition of the two terms are proposed in researches and practical uses. It is of theoretical significance and practical value to standardize the use of terms for ensuring marine safety.
